Working with schools to raise the achievement of minority ethnic pupils
The English Language Support Service (ELSS) supports the particular needs of:
- Pupils for whom English is an additional language (EAL)
- Schools with minority ethnic pupils at risk of under-achieving
- Refugees and asylum seekers
We offer
- Pupil support for pupils of statutory school age who are new to English
- Teacher support for more advanced learners
- Advice and guidance to staff in Early Years settings
- Early Years pupil support for individuals at particular risk of under-achievement
- School development work re: racial equality and pupil achievement
- Centre and school-based in-service training
- Some bilingual support available
- Community language GCSE entry support
- Help with work placements and FE entry for EAL pupils
- Home/school liaison
- Inter-agency liaison for supported pupils
- Guidance on working with minority ethnic families
- Community consultation and liaison
- Advice re: translating and interpreting services
- Multilingual resources
